The timing—during a traditionally slow news cycle—was widely interpreted as a strategic attempt to minimize public scrutiny. The memo contradicted years of claims from Trump-aligned figures, most notably former Florida Attorney General and current U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, who had previously insisted the list was real and even claimed it was “on her desk.” The contradiction left MAGA influencers scrambling for explanations, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt offering a vague clarification that Bondi had been referring to broader case files. The damage, however, was already done.
